3G
Will Not Be Mass Market Until 2008
Despite industry hype, mass adoption of 3G services
is still a few years away. This is one of the conclusions
in a new directory from Portio Research, ‘Worldwide
Directory of Mobile Network Operators’, which
also details healthy sustained growth in the sector
in the years 2003-4 after the post Millennium downturn.
As well as presenting current trends and market directions

Mobile
Data Will Account For 20% of Total Revenue By 2008
Mobile messaging services will be the biggest revenue
generator for network operators, primarily due to further
growth of SMS text messaging in booming markets, as
well as the take-up of advanced messaging services,
such as MMS and mobile instant messaging. These are
the conclusions of a new report from Portio Research,
‘Mobile Data Deployment Strategies’.
The report also makes it clear that in the future
Operators will need to view running networks as a “means
to an end” and concentrate their business models
on the core function of providing best-of-breed consumer
and business content and services. In this scenario
Voice revenues will continue to decline to become part
of a fixed fee contract offering unlimited free voice
calls and SMS bundled with a suite of non voice services.
